History of LuMin St. Cloud
Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM) at St. Cloud State University began in February 1956. Over the years, LCM was served by Howard Walton, Warren Jorensby, Joseph Ottoson, Sarah Nelson, David Doppenberg, Darius Larsen and Signe Gray.
University Lutheran Church of the Epiphany (ULCE) was founded in 1992 and chartered as a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) in 1994. ULCE purchased the former St. John’s Episcopal Church building on the north edge of the St. Cloud State campus to be a "Candle for Campus and Community."
Pastor Darius Larsen and Associate in Ministry Signe Gray were the campus and congregational ministers until 2003. In 2005, Pastor Jayne M. Thompson was called to serve as the Pastor of ULCE & LCM, through which she served campus and community until 2012.
Facing financial difficulties, the congregation of ULCE reluctantly voted to dissolve and sell their building in 2012. This changed the nature of the ministries of LCM to be where the body of Christ needs us to be, turning LCM into a true ministry on campus.
In 2016, LCM was rebranded as the LuMin Network. To follow suit, Lutheran Campus Ministry of St. Cloud changed our name to LuMin St. Cloud to signify the reach of our ministry beyond the campus of St. Cloud State University to all college students, faculty, young adults, and members of the St. Cloud community at large who desire a community of welcoming and acceptance.
Pastor Courtney Young was called to lead LuMin St. Cloud in 2016. Essentially starting from scratch, Pastor Courtney brought in new faces and new ways to serve campus and community, including office hours on campus and sponsoring Student Ministry Projects. She led the ministry until 2020.
Recent years have led LuMin St. Cloud in new and challenging directions. Steven Roenfeldt is currently leading LuMin St. Cloud as the Campus Administrator.
LuMin St. Cloud has organized many fun activities for our community, including monthly ilLuMinate worship services at Salem Lutheran Church, skiing at Powder Ridge in Kimball, Pub Theology in conjunction with other local churches and ministries, and many more.
LuMin St. Cloud has a long and cherished history of holding the ministries of peace and justice before the people of God in our community and beyond. LuMin St. Cloud offers an open and affirming public welcome to all members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies, families and friends. LuMin St. Cloud also participates in and supports many other justice and peace ministries in the community, including St. Cloud State's LGBT Resource Center, the Huskies Food Pantry, and Walk Together: United Against Sex Trafficking.
God is continuing to lead LuMin St. Cloud further into new and exciting territory. We always welcome new faces to participate in our activities as well as new ideas for activities and service work opportunities. We welcome anyone who wants to participate, regardless of your beliefs. We are a safe space for all. We welcome deep and difficult conversations of faith, and offer support and comfort for St. Cloud area students and young adults when they most need it.
